ABOUT ME & HOW I THINK

I'm Anna, the owner of Perfect Pawz! Training & Behaviour Practice - it's me you'll see for all aspects of training & behavioural help.  I want to give you the very best possible service - I care that your pet's issues are resolved, it's a dedicated and assured level of commitment.

I  create and restore a happy dog - owner relationship in a way that's fun, relaxed and informal, involving lots of praise, play, pats and fun.

Improving your dog's behaviour isn't about bullying, physical domination or using painful devices - those days are long gone, although sadly there's still plenty of 'trainers' using such methods & that's so sad - who want's to force a dog into submission or 'make' a dog comply, I certainly don't.  For me, nothing is better than watching dogs learn because it's fun and enjoyable to do so.  We've got to learn to listen to and respect our dogs as partners in a relationship & that's what I'm about.

How It All Began!

What's My Reward?

The difference in making emotional behavioural change via positive and fun, force free techniques that both dog and owner enjoy as a team vs aversive, harsh corrections and punishment and a sad, anxious, fearful animal who only 'complies' out of sheer desperation to avoid pain is for me - immense.

It's fantastic for me when I see people in the park after I've finished a course with them, & they're letting their dogs free (they may have been undertaking recall work) or maybe they're happily walking with another person & their dog/dog's playing together after we've working on reactivity issues.  It's especially satisfying if we've come a long way together or maybe the dog has been a 'last chance saloon dog' from rescue.

It has been my own animals that kick-started the whole thing & right from a very early age.  I was lucky enough to own animals (horses to begin with) who were given labels 'difficult/stupid/bad' etc. Even at the age of 11y I knew that was far from the truth & that with compassion, trust, care & understanding and above all listening, I could learn a lot from them & my gosh did I! I owe so much to these early experiences with horses & dogs.  If you listen, watch and observe, you will learn  & If you have patience and perseverance & pay attention to what that animal is actually trying to tell you, you will get somewhere.

I became a behaviourist & trainer because I really wanted to promote my feelings that dogs are truly part of a family & not 'an entity' to be bullied into submission.  I felt strongly that dogs should be happy to learn, have fun & totally enjoy the experience, not be coerced, be afraid and bend to the will of whoever was imposing correction and change.  At the time I became a behaviourist and trainer this was very new thinking - just beginning to take hold (1999) - sadly there is still a lot of resistance to change.

LABRADORS. LABRADORS. LABRADORS!

We're 'Labrador' Through n' Through

As a family, we have always had Labrador Retrievers - always black!  As many people say, once you've had a breed, you kind of just stick with it & so that's the case with us...we love them & we certainly know the breed.

Labradors come in all different shapes & sizes but we have the show variety rather than working field trial, which is a much larger, stockier example representative of the Kennel Club breed standard.

If you've got a Labrador, you're in good hands - many new owners do struggle with their temperament which IS sad & I do find it a little frustrating sometimes because Labdradors are extremely bouncy & exuberant when young but do so want to please & this can often lead into a battle of wills with their person - they are all very different, you've just got to be understanding and patient.

We are heavily into competing our dogs, exhibiting them at shows across the UK at the highest Championship level and have achieved an enormous amount of success, the highest accolade of course is multiple Crufts qualifications & the chance to show on that famous green carpet most recently with our amazing boy Millroseglen Bona Fide.

Ultimately though our dogs are family pets & love nothing more than cosying up at night with a chew or going out for a swim or run.  I am incredibly proud & bursting with pride when they win big - they're superstars, but they're our pets..want for nothing & know it & that is how life should be.

Horses are my other great love & we've owned a fair few - Welsh Cobs (Sec C) are my equine Labrador equivalent.

Temperament Research Involving Newly Recognised Breeds such as Cockapoos & Labradoodles

As part of my MSc, I devised & undertook a research programme at Newcastle University looking at how the temperament of Labradoodles & Cockapoos may vary as compared with their respective parent breeds, this also involved a comprehensive investigation into the rise of newly-recognised cross-breed dogs.
