...Creating the family pet!
You love your pet, he or she is part of your family, so it's very important when choosing us, that you know exactly how we train, what our principles are & what methods we use. At Perfect Pawz! we like to be absolutely crystal clear about this, with us it's of paramount important that you are too.
We believe that you have acquired a dog because you wish him or her to become your beloved family pet. As such, we anticipate that you wish to shower your pet with lots of cuddles & kisses & in short become well & truly part of the family. At Perfect Pawz! it is not part of our ethos to train your dog in such a way that he suddenly becomes unable to enjoy all these privileges! We treat every family situation as an individual & our absolute prime aim is to allow your dog to slot into family life with total ease so that he or she becomes an absolute joy to live with - we want you to love your dog!
At Perfect Pawz! we will always train with care, compassion & understanding. Our hallmark is appreciating that one method will of course not suit every dog - how can it? We are concerned by the recent trend in adopting the so called "whispering techniques" ie. advocating that owners engage in aversive & "dominating" procedures in order to exert "strong leadership". In accordance with the APDT* & APBC* we will not endorse aversive methods. As we have witnessed, this can be very harmful when applied to more naturally shy dogs & a much more compliant approach is needed.
At Perfect Pawz! we engage in constant research in the field of dog behaviour so that we can bring owners the very latest techniques & advances.
We also focus on treating the underlying training problem rather than applying a "quick fix" gadget solution even though this may take a longer time to solve issues.
We use a variety of methods to train our dogs but all are reward based & based on positive reinforcement or shaping principles. It is always our aim to phase out rewards (ie. vary schedules of reinforcement) so that we quickly enable the dog to work for the owner rather than simply for food! Each dog will be assessed to see which training method we think will work best for them.
In addition to conventional reward based training, we employ clicker training but only on an individual basis as class based clicker training in our experience is counter productive to learning. We also use a variety of modern methods throughout our remedial training programmes, the suitability of which will be judged according to the individual dog.
We do not advocate the use of nor endorse choke chains, pinch collars or prong collars or any type or electric collar device during our training programmes.
It is not our policy to use any type of aversive product that causes discomfort to any dog during training or to train a dog by using submission - we believe this to be unethical.
